Thali Regional Cuisine of India in Ninth Square has
been such a hit, Chef Prasad Chirnomula’s opened a
second Elm City location:
Thali Too (65 Broadway, New Haven, 203-776-1600)
In the courtyard space behind the Yale Bookstore formerly
occupied by La Piazza. The new Thali in town boasts
a major distinction from the original (not to mention
the Thalis in Ridgefield and New Canaan): it’s all
vegetarian. Inspired by a recent culinary trip to
India with foodie pal David Rosengarten (of The Rosengarten
Report, davidrosengarten.com), Chef Prasad designed
a menu to demonstrate how flavorful vegetarian food
can be. Mindful of the campus clientele the new location
will draw, he kept the student budget in mind, too:
No item costs more than $10.

Ah,
the weather is warming, the dorms are unloading and
reloading, and New Haven’s restaurant scene just keeps
percolating, in spite of this recession that’s squeezing
our purses a bit tighter. Here are six new and semi-new
eateries, that we’re calling The Summer Six, that
will keep us coming back for more, all summer long:
Thali
Too
Last
Thursday, Chef Prasad Chirnomula and hundreds of his
closest friends celebrated the grand opening of Thali
Too, a super-cool vegetarian eatery just off Broadway,
behind the Yale Bookstore. Formerly La Piazza, the
new place boasts a large, luxurious patio; an open
kitchen; a Lassi bar, where yogurt drinks (spiked
and not) are mixed with fruits and spices and served
icy cold; and an assortment of flavorful, inexpensive
treats made famous in the markets of India, many based
on rice, lentils, crepes and flat breads. Prasad tells
me that Thali Too was humming even before its official
opening; “Why not?” he says. “The food is delicious,
it’s good for you, and it’s cheap.” Amen.
